The number of police officers shot in the line of duty is on the rise for the second year in a row, according to new data released by the National Fraternal Order of Police (NFOP).
So far in 2022: 101 officers have been shot and 17 were killed.
A 43% increase from 2021
A 63% increase from 2020
These figures do not count attacks where officers were shot at, but not struck.
The states with the highest number of officers so far this year are:
Arizona, Texas, New York, Georgia, and Washington
NFOP President Patrick Yoes said in a statement:
“We are in the midst of a real crisis… Last year was one of the most dangerous years for law enforcement, with more officers shot in the line of duty since the [NFOP] began recording this data.”
“It is important to remember that when we look at these numbers, they represent people who are fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters.”
It’s no coincidence that this trend lines up with the “defund the police” movement which grew out of the George Floyd riots in the summer of 2020.
And while Biden has recently tried to distance himself from the movement, when he was asked in 2020 if he would support policy to “redirect some of the funding,” Biden replied, “Yes, absolutely.”
