Let’s step back and talk plainly—for a moment—not with outrage, but with honesty.

We live in a rapidly changing world. Same-sex marriage is legal in the United States, and many loving families today include two dads or two moms. It’s not unusual anymore for kids in school to notice that some classmates have different family dynamics. They might ask, “Why does Johnny have two moms?” or “Why does that girl want to be called he now?” These are not strange questions—they’re innocent, born from curiosity and growing minds.

Let’s take a breath and talk about something most families—no matter their politics—can relate to:

wanting what’s best for their kids.

Our society is changing. Same-sex marriage is the law of the land. LGBTQ+ individuals are no longer in the shadows—they’re our neighbors, teachers, coworkers, and yes, parents. More children than ever are growing up with two dads, two moms, or loved ones who identify outside the traditional gender norms. For today’s youth, that’s just part of the world they’re learning to navigate.

When schools include characters in books with two moms, or lessons about people who are transgender, it’s not about “turning kids gay”—it’s about showing them that the world is diverse. That other families may not look like theirs. That people are different, and that’s okay. This is not “grooming.” This is reality.

But just as we recognize that diversity, we must also recognize something else just as vital: parental rights.

What concerns many parents—especially those of faith—is not necessarily that kids are learning these things, but that they’re learning them without any say from the people who know them best—their parents. These lessons are being presented at very young ages, without prior notice, and without an option to opt out.

And that’s where the U.S. Supreme Court is stepping in.

UNITED STATES – Mahmoud v. Taylor Could Reshape Public Education

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear Mahmoud v. Taylor, a potentially landmark case that pits parental rights against public school curriculum mandates.

At the heart of the case are Muslim and Christian parents in Montgomery County, Maryland. These families—supported by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty—say that Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have violated their constitutional rights by refusing to let them opt their children out of classroom readings that include LGBTQ+ storybooks.

Books like Pride Puppy, My Rainbow, and Uncle Bobby’s Wedding are being used in elementary classrooms without prior notification. These aren’t sex-ed manuals—they’re children’s books. But they introduce topics like same-sex relationships and gender identity—things many parents believe should be taught at home, on their terms.

The school district insists that these lessons are “inclusive” and “age-appropriate,” and that allowing opt-outs would “erode a safe learning environment.” They’ve scrapped the previous opt-out policy and now consider this material mandatory.

The parents aren’t asking for censorship. They’re asking for consent.

They want to know what’s being taught—and the chance to say, “Not yet. My child’s not ready.” That’s a fair ask in a Constitutional Republic, where the government is supposed to serve the people, not override them.

Let’s be clear: This isn’t a “Don’t Say Gay” case.

That label oversimplifies and polarizes a much more complicated debate.

What it comes down to is this:

“Don’t Hide What You’re Teaching.”

Whether you agree or disagree, transparency is the foundation of trust in education, and when that transparency breaks down, so does public confidence in our schools.

“Although the jury is still out if these are really ‘Don’t Say Gay’ laws, I can say that when gender and pronouns can be used in stories as long as they’re heteronormative—but get flagged when labeled ‘gay’—we’re setting up a dangerous double standard. Is this any different than the pink triangle the Nazis pinned on gays during the Holocaust? Is this a modern book burning?”

Here’s the thing: Introducing children to the idea that families and people come in all shapes and forms isn’t about “grooming.” It’s about reflecting reality. America has always called itself the melting pot—a place where diversity isn’t just tolerated, but celebrated. Teaching kids that the world includes all kinds of people isn’t a threat to values—it’s a way to prepare them for the world they will live and work in.

But here’s where it gets tricky—and why a case like Mahmoud v. Taylor is so important.

While it’s essential to teach kids about the world around them, it’s also essential to respect the rights of parents to guide those conversations according to their family’s values and faith. There is a very real concern—felt by parents from all backgrounds—that they’re being cut out of the loop. That their children are encountering topics in school before they’re emotionally ready, or before a parent has had a chance to explain things in a way that aligns with their beliefs.

That isn’t bigotry. That’s parenting.

And yes, as someone who is openly gay and part of the Gay community, let me say this clearly: Not everything being taught in schools is an attempt to indoctrinate. But if we’re being honest, we also have to admit that just as some accuse the LGBTQ community of “grooming” kids into a lifestyle, society at large has spent decades grooming kids in only one direction—the straight path. That’s why representation matters—not to convert, but to acknowledge reality.

The tension here isn’t about “who’s right” or “who’s wrong.” It’s about transparency, age-appropriate education, and ensuring that parents and educators are working together, not in opposition. That’s what our Constitutional Republic should strive for.

Because freedom isn’t just the right to speak—it’s also the right to know what’s being said to your kids.

HUNGARY – Banning Pride and Targeting LGBTQ+ Citizens

Now let’s travel to Europe, where the same culture war is playing out with drastically different results.

Hungary’s Parliament just passed a constitutional amendment banning LGBTQ+ public gatherings—including Pride events. This isn’t just a social policy; it’s a hardline legal mandate that now enshrines traditional definitions of gender, recognizing only male and female, and allows the government to use facial recognition to monitor and penalize those who attend or organize LGBTQ+ events.

The amendment was passed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party with 140 votes in favor and only 21 against.

This law empowers Hungarian authorities to:

Ban LGBTQ+ events entirely.

Monitor participants via surveillance tech.

Revoke citizenship for dual nationals deemed a “threat” to national security, especially targeting those outside the EU.

This is government overreach on steroids. It’s the kind of crackdown that has human rights organizations sounding the alarm, calling it a direct attack on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and civil rights.

What’s happening in Hungary is a warning shot. You may think it couldn’t happen here—but freedom erodes quietly. It doesn’t always come with sirens and boots. Sometimes, it comes in a law signed while the public isn’t watching.

And while many conservative voices praise Orbán for defending “traditional values,” we must never trade liberty for control. In a truly free nation, people must have the right to express their identities—even if we don’t always agree with them.

So, ask yourself:

Are schools helping kids understand the world—or are they hiding information from parents?

Are governments defending values—or suppressing voices?

And are we losing the balance between protecting children and respecting their right to learn about the world as it truly is?

This is not about forcing kids to become anything—it’s about preparing them to understand everything.

But it must be done with parents, not against them.
