Pelosi-Trump war paralyzes government; ‘American Taliban’ to be released from prison

Government paralyzed: Trump calls for end to ‘phony investigations’ after Pelosi accuses him of engaging in a ‘cover-up’
The very public rift between President Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday illustrated of how much the Russia See More collusion investigation — and what Trump supporters would call Democrats’ obsession with ousting him from the Oval Office — have paralyzedthe government. The meeting between Trump and Democratic leaders Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was cut short and any plans to rebuild America’s infrastructure were put on hold after Pelosi accused of the president of engaging in a “cover-up.” Trump, in a Rose Garden statement, said that Democrats must end their “phony investigations” before he’ll negotiate with them on issues like infrastructure.

So, right now, both sides remain at a standstill. Trump and the White House insist Democrats can’t accept the findings of no collusion in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report and want “do-overs” with numerous congressional investigations. Democrats show no signs of easing up on their investigations and insist Trump is obstructing justice by instructing witnesses to defy subpoenas and be uncooperative.

‘Catastrophic’ tornado damage reported in Missouri capital
Jefferson City, the capital city of Missouri, has taken a direct hit from a tornado and suffered possibly “catastrophic” damage, according to reports. According to the National Weather Service, a “confirmed large and destructive tornado” was observed over Jefferson City at 11:43 p.m., moving northeast at 40 mph. The twister appeared to have traveled through the center part of town, the Jefferson City News-Tribune reported. “We are currently identifying the location of damages and searching for injured residents,” Lt. David Williams of the city’s police department said in a statement to the News-Tribune. “The primary need at this time is for those not affected to stay clear of the impacted areas so that Emergency personnel can assist those in need.”

‘American Taliban’ to be released from prison Thursday
John Walker Lindh, the Islamic militant who became known as the infamous “American Taliban,” is set to be released from a U.S. federal prison Thursday despite lawmakers’ concerns. Lindh, who has been behind bars in Terre Haute, Ind., is set to be discharged several years before he would complete the 20-year prison sentence he received for joiningand supporting the Taliban. The former Islamist fighter and enemy combatant was arrested in 2001, just months after the Sept. 11 attacks and the start of the war in Afghanistan, along with a group of Taliban fighters who were captured by U.S. forces.

In a letter last week to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, lawmakers expressed concerns about the “security and safety implications” of freeing an unrepentant terrorist who officials say continues to “openly call for extremist violence.” They also sought details on how the agency is working to prevent prisoners such as Lindh from committing additional crimes after their release and asked which other “terrorist offenders” are next in line to be freed.

Avenatti’s legal troubles continue to mount
Federal prosecutors in New York on Wednesday charged embattled attorney Michael Avenatti with defrauding adult-film star Stormy Daniels, the client who propelled Avenatti into the national spotlight. Avenatti, 48, faces one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. He faces up to 22 years in prison if convicted of those charges. Daniels (aka Stephanie Clifford) is not named in the indictment, but a federal law enforcement official confirmed to Fox News that she is the client prosecutors claimed Avenatti defrauded.

Avenatti rocketed to fame representing Daniels when she sued to be released from a non-disclosure agreement involving an alleged tryst with President Trump in 2006. He parlayed his notoriety into numerous cable news appearances and even was floated as a potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2020.

Former staffer for Michelle Obama evades subpoena in Smollett case
Tina Tchen, the former chief of staff to first lady Michelle Obama, declined Wednesday to be served with a subpoena by a retired Illinois judge seeking the appointment of a special prosecutor in the Jussie Smollett case, according to the process server. In an email to former Illinois appellate judge Sheila O’Brien obtained by Fox News, the process server wrote that a security guard at the Chicago law firm where Tchen is a partner “called up to her and spoke with her and she said that she in [sic] never going to accept service and to not allow me up to their Law firm.” The subpoena would have required Tchen to appear at a May 31 hearing on O’Brien’s request for a special prosecutor and provide “any and all documents, notes, phone records, texts, tape recordings made or received at any time, concerning your conversations with [Cook CountyState’s Attorney] Kim Foxx in re: Jussie Smollett.”

Nancy Pelosi may be forced into pursuing impeachment against Trump: Do You Think That’s Wise?

Pelosi facing increasing pressure to support impeaching Trump
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scheduled to have a special caucus-wide meeting of House Democrats on Wednesday morning as she faces growing calls within her party to impeach President Trump. Prior meetings involving Pelosi and top Democrats have escalated into heated exchanges, with the party torn over how to address Trump See More controversies. Pelosi has been reluctant to support impeachingTrump and has warned Democrats that impeachment could distract from the focus needed to win in the 2020 presidential election.

The House speaker has also warned colleagues that voters may not support impeaching Trump and that the party could suffer voter backlash if Trump was ultimately acquitted in the Republican-led Senate. Still, former White House counselDonald McGahn’s refusal, on Trump’s orders, to appear at a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday has escalated tension between congressional Democrats and the Trump administration. A growing number of Democrats say they are dealing with a “lawless president” and that impeachment, not numerous investigations, may be the only way to hold the president accountable.

Joe Frontrunner versus ‘Crazy Uncle Joe’
Joe Biden might be leading the race for his party’s nomination now, but the former vice president is a “walking time bomb” and has to perform a “high-wire act” if he is to emerge from the crowded Democratic field in first place, according to Brit Hume, Fox News’ senior political analyst. “I like Biden on a personal basis, but I think he is a walking time bomb,” Hume said. “I think his age is an issue, I’m the same age as he is, my age is an issue, I think his is too… the filters don’t work as well, the memory isn’t as sharp. Hume made the comment while discussing Biden’s 2020 prospects on the latest episode of the Fox News podcast, “The Candidates with Bret Baier.”

Dozens of tornadoes slam the Midwest
Dozens of storms and tornadoes in the Midwest on Tuesday damaged multiple buildings — including a racetrack grandstand –but were expected to weaken by Wednesday. Missouri and parts of Illinois already have been hit with severe weather in the second consecutive day of severe storms and were blamed for at least two deaths. St. Louis was largely spared from the powerful stormsystem, but baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals called off their Tuesday game against their cross-state rivals, the Kansas City Royals, as the rumbling of an approaching storm could be heard downtown. The city’s Lambert Airport shut down for an hour Tuesday butresumed flights a short time later.

Beverly Hills tobacco ban advances
The exclusive community of Beverly Hills, Calif., took a step Tuesday toward becoming the first city in the United States to ban the sale of tobacco products. The city council approved an ordinance that would ban the sale of cigarettes, cigars and other tobacco products at all retail locations within the tony Southern California city, including gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies and newsstands. However, hotels and several high-end cigar lounges — including the Grand Havana Room, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s favorite cigar club – would be exempt from the rule. The second reading and final vote on the ordinance is expected to take place in early June. If passed, the ordinance will be reviewed by the council in three years. Beverly Hills wasn’t the only place to make history Tuesday: Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill into law that allows the composting of human bodiesas an alternative to burials and cremations.

Cannes film poster depicts decapitated Trump
A B-movie poster courted controversy at the Cannes Film Festival’s Market by featuring a bikini-clad woman resembling first lady Melania Trump holding two decapitated heads — one of them a President Trump-like character wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap. The poster, for a 90-minute sci-fi thriller called “When Women Rule the World,” featured the tagline: “Meet the first lady of the future with her HEADS OF STATE!” The film was being promoted at the Cannes Market, part of the international film festival held each May in France.

It’s The 11th hour In IRAN Getting Nukes! @RealDonaldTrump Says not On His Watch! Do You Support Conflict If Needed?

Trump vows to not let Iran get nukes; Buttigieg makes his 2020 case at Fox News town hall

Trump vows to not let Iran get nukes, takes on Biden and Buttigieg in Fox News interview
President Trump vowed, in a wide-ranging interview with Fox News, not to let Iran get nuclear weapons – but reiterated his reluctance to go to war. “I will not let Iran have nuclear See More weapons,” he told Steve Hilton, host of “The Next Revolution.” “I don’t want to fight. But you do have situations like Iran, you can’t let them have nuclear weapons — you just can’t let that happen.” Earlier Sunday, the president tweeted that a war would result in “the official end of Iran” and warned the nation to “[n]ever threaten the United States again!” Trump tweeted hours after a rocket landed less than a mile from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, the first such attack since September.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have risen in recent weeks after the Trump administration ordered warships and bombers to the Middle East earlier this month to counter threatened attacks against U.S. interests by Iran or Iranian-backed forces. During his interview, the president also addressed the rising challenge 2020 presidential candidate, South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and 2020 Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden’s questionable ties to China and role in the Iran nuclear deal Trump withdrew from last year.

Buttigieg defends appearance on Fox News town hall
Insurgent Democrat presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg acknowledged at the Fox News town hall in Claremont, N.H. Sunday evening that he needs to do more to appeal to “black and brown” voters, even as he parried a series of policy questions — and, on several occasions, went directly after President Trump.

Buttigieg argued that minority voters are “skeptical of people who seem to come out of nowhere,” after moderator Chris Wallace noted that he was polling at one-percent support among nonwhite primary voters according to a recent Fox News poll. Buttigieg also took on the controversial newly passed pro-life legislation passed in Alabama, as well as similar bills making their way through other state legislatures, Trump’s tweets, tax hike proposals and explained his decision, as a Democrat, to appear on a Fox News town hall.

Jimmy Carter – kingmaker, once again
Jimmy Carter appears to again be a kingmaker in the race for the White House. At least three Democratic presidential hopefulshave ventured to the tiny town of Plains, Ga., to meet with Carter, 94, and his wife, Rosalynn,91. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, have visited with the Carters and attended the former president’s Sunday School lesson in Plains. It’s quite a turnabout for a man who largely receded from party politics after his presidency, often without being missed by his party’s leaders in Washington, where he was an outsider even as a White House resident.

Sweden calls for Assange’s detention over alleged rape
A top Swedish prosecutor on Monday formally asked that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange be detained in absentia over the alleged rape of a woman in her home nearly a decade ago, reports said. The move was seen as the first step in his possible extradition from Britain. The Australian also faces a U.S. extradition warrant for allegedly conspiring to hack into a Pentagon computer.

A merciful ‘Terminator’
Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Sunday that he won’t press charges against the man accused of assaulting him over the weekend. “A lot of you have asked, but I’m not pressing charges,” the 71-year-old “Terminator” star tweeted. “I hope this was a wake-up call, and he gets his life on the right track. But I’m moving on and I’d rather focus on the thousands of great athletes I met at @ArnoldSports Africa.” On Saturday, a video went viral of the former Republican governor of California at an Arnold Classic Africa event in Johannesburg, South Africa, when a man rushed and dropkicked Schwarzenegger from behind.

‘Game of Thrones’ comes to an end – and fans dump on the finale
The much-anticipated series finale of “Game of Thrones” aired on HBO on Sunday and many “GoT” fans were not impressed. Without giving up spoilers (that’s a warning), some fans unhappy with who ultimately wound up on the Iron Throne. Other fans online have called the finale the “worst episode of the entire series.” Some are grouping end of “Thrones” with “The Sopranos” and “Lost” as among the worst TV finales of all time. It looks like a petition demanding that HBO remake the final season “with competent writers” will likely get many, many more signatures.

LONDON/MOSCOW (Reuters) – The bills are due for millions of barrels of contaminated Russian oil that have been stuck for weeks in pipelines from Belarus to Germany – but no one wants to pay.

Western oil companies and European refiners that bought the oil a month ago, before discovering it was unusable, have so far refrained from freezing payments as they are keen to maintain good long-term relations with the world’s second biggest oil exporter and avoid protracted legal battles in Russian courts.

Instead, several Western buyers have asked Russian producers if they can postpone payments for the tainted crude while buyers and sellers agree how to resolve the mess – and how to share the costs, four traders involved in Russian oil trading said.

For the buyers of an estimated 19 million barrels of contaminated crude stuck in the pipeline and loaded on tankers, it’s a $1.2 billion question.

The buyers want Russian producers to give guarantees in the form of bank deposits that they will contribute to the clean-up, or delay payments due this week until the crisis is resolved, said a source at European refiner, who declined to be named.

“There’s around 0.8-0.9 million tonnes of dirty oil sitting in the pipelines between Belarus and Germany that no refiner wants to take,” he said. “This oil needs to be evacuated somewhere to restart the pipeline. But it would be wrong for Russia to assume European refiners will bear all costs.”

The refiner said Russian oil producers had yet to respond to the proposals made by major European buyers.

“We are ready to help sort out the problem and find solutions for the dirty oil. But we want Russian producers to come up with financial guarantees that they will help cover the costs,” said a second buyer of Russian oil in Europe.

Russian state-owned oil producer Rosneft said it was too early to comment on the issue. Lukoil declined to comment and Surgutneftegas said it was holding normal commercial talks with its buyers.

International oil companies and trading houses have not commented publicly on the contamination crisis.

State Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft declined to comment on the issue of compensation. It said on Tuesday it was not to blame for the organic chloride contamination because it could only have been added by producers.

MAY DEADLINES

It has been three weeks since Belarus told oil refiners and pipeline operators in Europe that the crude heading towards them down the 5,500 km (3,400 mile) Druzhba pipeline network was heavily contaminated with organic chloride.

Russian oil flows via Druzhba were halted, sending crude to a six-month high above $75 a barrel and tarnishing Russia’s reputation as an exporter at a time of rising competition with U.S. and Middle Eastern oil sales.

Russia has since said the oil was contaminated deliberately by an unnamed local producer while Belarus said it would take months to restore clean oil supplies to Europe via Druzhba.

Organic chloride is used to clean oil wells and accelerate the flow of crude but it should be removed before the oil enters the supply chain as the compounds can damage refining equipment.

To get the pipeline working again, the tainted oil needs to be removed and stored somewhere so it can be diluted with clean oil – in some cases in proportions of one to 30 – to bring the organic chloride down to safe levels.

Traders estimate the process for all the contaminated oil in Druzhba would cost tens of millions of dollars.

In the meantime, the question of who should pay for the contaminated oil when the bills come due this week remains.

$1.2 BILLION QUESTION

Exports to Europe via Druzhba are fairly complicated because they involve dozens of sellers, buyers and banks. Normally, contracts are rolled over and letters of credit renewed as payments are made via intermediaries – and the oil keeps flowing.

But the contamination has thrown a spanner in the works.

Russian producers sell oil to European refiners along the Druzhba pipeline in Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Those refineries are owned by companies such as PKN Orlen, Grupa Lotos, MOL, Total, Eni and Shell, among others.

Once the Russian oil producers have transferred their crude to Transneft, it effectively becomes responsible for delivering the right quality of crude to pipeline companies in Europe.

As soon as those companies, such as Poland’s PERN or Slovakia’s Transpetrol, acknowledge receipt of oil from Transneft, the ownership of the crude passes from Russian sellers to European buyers.

But no money changes hands at this point as payment is usually due in the middle of the next month, meaning the bills for oil exported via Druzhba in April should be paid by mid-May.

According to trading sources, at least 19 million barrels of contaminated crude, worth $1.2 billion at current market prices, has yet to be paid for.

That includes 8 million barrels in the Druzhba pipeline and another 11 million barrels loaded onto tankers at Ust-Luga port in the Baltic. Those vessels are now anchored off Europe because the trading houses that took on the oil are struggling to sell it to refiners.

Russian producers, meanwhile, have already paid taxes to the Russian state for the oil they sold in April – such as export duties and mineral extraction taxes – putting them under pressure to recoup money owed by the buyers.

‘EXPENSIVE EXERCISE’

With payment deadlines looming, none of the Western oil buyers has yet instructed their banks to withhold funds as that could have significant repercussions, according to traders.

“You can of course say that I won’t pay because I didn’t get the right quality oil,” said an executive at a major commodities trading house. “But no one wants this nuclear option. We prefer responsible dialogue.”

Another source with a major buyer said the money it owes for Ust-Luga cargoes will be paid on time but it will be accompanied by claims for damages against the sellers for poor quality.

Further complicating talks between buyers and sellers is the fact that the various oil contracts in question fall under different legal systems.

Most sales along the pipeline are governed by Russian law – which leaves issues of oil quality open to interpretation. Sales from Ust-Luga, meanwhile, are mostly governed by English law, according to traders familiar with the contracts.

“We expect a complicated claim handling through the whole supply chain of Russian crude oil,” said Swedish refiner Preem.

Belarusian refiner Naftan said it had filed claims against unnamed Russian suppliers for delivering low quality oil during April.

For now though, until buyers and sellers can agree how to get the tainted oil out of Druzhba – and who will foot the bill – the pipeline is set to remain shut.

“Based on Druzhba’s normal throughput, every new day of stoppage costs Russia $80 million in lost revenue. That is an expensive exercise,” said the trader with a European refiner.

May 15, 2019

(Reuters) – Macy’s Inc topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly same-store sales and profit on Wednesday, benefiting from increased online sales and higher demand for items sold at its off-price stores.

Macy’s shares, which have so far lost more than a quarter of their value this year, rose about 3% to $22.46 in early trading.

Like its peers, the Cincinnati, Ohio-based department store chain faltered in the past few years as it struggled to adjust to a fiercely competitive retail landscape where shoppers buy more goods online at places like Amazon.com Inc.

In response, the 160-year old retailer has closed more than 100 stores since 2015 and cut thousands of jobs as mall traffic plummeted.

Macy’s has poured money into building up its private label clothing as well as expand its off-price venture, Backstage, by adding 45 more stores this year.

The company in February said it would also invest in categories where Macy’s has a strong market position such as dresses, jewelry, women’s shoes and beauty products.

“Our brick & mortar sales trend improved sequentially in the first quarter, supported by … Backstage,” Chief Executive Officer Jeff Gennette said in a statement.

Gennette also said the company saw double-digit growth in its digital business and that mobile continues to be the retailer’s fastest-growing channel for sales growth.

Sales at Macy’s stores open more than 12 months, including sales in department stores licensed to third parties, rose for the sixth straight quarter. They were up 0.7%, above the average analyst estimate of a 0.3% rise, according to research firm Consensus Metrix.

Last quarter, Macy’s announced a plan focused on cost cuts for 2019 to speed up decision-making and result in an annual savings of $100 million.

The company earned $136 million, or 44 cents per share, in the first quarter ended May 4, compared to $139 million, or 45 cents per share, a year ago. That exceeded the average analyst estimate of 33 cents.

Net sales fell to $5.50 billion, roughly in line with analysts expectations, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

“With comp results coming in better-than-feared, we’d expect a modest relief rally out of Macy’s today, but would not be chasing the stock,” Gordon Haskett analyst Chuck Grom said in a note.

The company also repeated its previously issued financial forecast for the year.

(Reuters) – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on Wednesday was mulling whether to sign the United States’ strictest abortion law, part of a multistate effort to get the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider women’s constitutional right to abortion.

The state’s Republican-controlled Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that would outlaw nearly all abortions, including in the cases of pregnancies that resulted from rape or incest, allowing exceptions only to protect the mother’s health.

The Republican governor is a strong opponent of abortion but has so far withheld comment on whether she would sign the bill.

If Ivey signs the bill, the law would take effect six months later. But it is certain to face legal challenge from abortion rights groups, which have vowed to sue.

Legislation to restrict abortion rights has been introduced this year in 16 states, four of whose governors have signed bills banning abortion if an embryonic heartbeat can be detected.

The Alabama bill goes further, banning abortions at any time. Those performing abortions would be committing a felony, punishable by 10 to 99 years in prison. A woman who receives an abortion would not be held criminally liable.

The Senate defeated a Democratic amendment that would have allowed legal abortions for women and girls impregnated by rape or incest.

Anti-abortion advocates know any laws they pass are certain to be challenged. Courts this year have blocked a restrictive Kentucky law and another in Iowa passed last year.

But supporters of the Alabama ban said the right to life of the fetus transcends other rights, an idea they would like tested at the Supreme Court.

The high court, now with a majority of conservative justices after Republican President Donald Trump appointed two, could possibly overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision establishing a woman’s right to an abortion.

Just this year, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio have outlawed abortion after a doctor can detect an embryonic heartbeat.

Opponents call the “heartbeat” legislation a virtual ban because embryonic cardiac activity can be detected as early as six weeks, before a woman may be aware she is pregnant.

The National Organization for Women denounced Alabama’s ban as unconstitutional.

Actress and activist Alyssa Milano has called for a sex strike under the social media hashtag #SexStrike in response to the campaigns against abortion rights, urging women to refuse sex with men “until we get bodily autonomy back.”

WARSAW (Reuters) – Poland’s ambassador to Israel was spat at while sitting in his car in Tel Aviv, Israeli police said, and the Polish government condemned the incident, which coincided with rising tensions between the two countries.

“I am very worried to hear of a racist attack on @PLinIsrael ambassador @mmagierowski. Poland strongly condemns this xenophobic act of aggression. Violence against diplomats or any other citizens should never be tolerated,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.

An Israeli police spokesman said on Wednesday a 65-year-old Israeli architect was arrested over Tuesday’s spitting incident. At a court hearing on Wednesday, he was put under house arrest until police complete their investigation, his lawyer said.

The Polish Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s ambassador to Warsaw, Anna Azari, over the matter, a ministry spokeswoman told the state-run news agency PAP.

“The event is under police investigation. We express our fullest sympathy to the ambassador and our shock at the attack,” Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said.

Polish-Israeli relations have deteriorated in recent months over accusations that Warsaw’s nationalist PiS government has tolerated a revival of anti-Semitic behavior, a charge it denies.

Hundreds of far-right supporters marched in Warsaw on Saturday in protest against a U.S. law on the restitution of Jewish property seized during or after World War Two, an increasingly prominent issue in Polish election campaigns.

David Johan, the suspect’s lawyer, told reporters his client had been turned away from the Polish Embassy on Tuesday after trying to inquire about restitution.

Later, outside the embassy, the alleged assailant “approached the vehicle of the Polish ambassador to Israel, opened the door and then spat (at him),” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

Johan said the attack had not been premeditated.

“My client was walking in the street and an embassy vehicle honked at him,” the attorney told reporters. “My client apologized during his interrogation. He said he didn’t even know it was the ambassador himself.”

The PiS government has said that Poland – which had one of the world’s biggest Jewish communities before it was almost entirely wiped out by Nazi occupiers – was a victim of World War Two and so should not be saddled with any financial obligations.

In response to the ultra-nationalist march, the World Jewish Congress urged Polish religious and political leaders on Wednesday to unequivocally condemn anti-Semitism.

On Monday the Polish government canceled a visit by an Israeli delegation as it learned that the Israelis intended to bring up the restitution issue, the Foreign Ministry said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai on Wednesday proposed allowing phone companies to block unwanted “robocalls” by default in a bid to reduce the flood of unwanted calls.

Pai said many service providers have held off developing and deploying default call-blocking tools because of uncertainty about whether the tools are legal under the FCC rules.

Allowing the default call-blocking could significantly increase development and consumer adoption of the tools, Pai said.

“By making it clear that such call blocking is allowed, the FCC will give voice service providers the legal certainty they need to block unwanted calls from the outset so that consumers never have to get them,” Pai said.

The U.S. telecommunications regulator is expected to take action on Pai’s proposal at its June 6 meeting.

Pai and the other four FCC commissioners are set to testify later on Wednesday before a U.S. House panel amid frustration in Congress and among U.S. consumers over the flood of robocalls.

YouMail, a company that blocks robocalls and tracks them, estimated there were 4.9 billion unwanted U.S. calls last month after nearly 48 billion in 2018, which was up nearly 60 percent over 2017.

Three-quarters of the U.S. Senate back legislation to provide regulators and law enforcement authorities the additional tools to prevent illegal robocalls and punish robocallers. The bill would also make it easier for the FCC to impose financial penalties.

In May 2018, Pai called on companies to adopt an industry-developed “call authentication system” aimed at ending the use of illegitimate spoofed numbers from the telephone system.

Pai said this week he expects major phone providers to implement those caller ID standards this year and will host a summit on July 11 to review the industry’s progress.

“We chose this industry-led path because it is the fastest way to help consumers, but I remain committed to taking regulatory action” if carriers do not act this year, Pai said in a statement on Monday.

In November, Pai wrote to the chief executive officers of major providers including AT&T Inc, Verizon Communications Inc, Sprint Corp, demanding they launch the system no later than 2019 to combat robocalls.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said this week the FCC should require call authentication technology and make available free tools to consumers to block the calls. She also urged the FCC to set up a robocall enforcement division.
