May is for Military Appreciation, June is for Pride: Let’s Honor Both – Not Forget Either
Have We Forgotten May Is for Military Appreciation
Let me tell you something I see online all the time, and honestly, it’s hard to argue with it. You see someone post, “Happy Pride Month!” and then the flood of comments comes in. “June should be Military Appreciation Month instead,” they say. “Why do we have a whole month for this when our veterans and military families don’t get nearly the same attention?” It’s a sentiment that pops up again and again.
Just the other day, I overheard it in real life too, standing in line. Someone was chatting about how excited they were for June, “Oh, Pride Month is so colorful and fun!” And someone else chimed in, “Wait, isn’t that supposed to be Military Month instead?” That quick back-and-forth says everything about how quickly our focus can shift, and how easily the sacrifices of our military can get overshadowed by the glitz, controversy, and hashtags of Pride.
May is a month that carries the weight of sacrifice, service, and the unwavering commitment of our military. For over 25 years, May has been recognized as National Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor and thank our armed forces and their families for their tireless dedication to our Constitutional Republic.
May is packed with these reminders of loyalty, unity, and the enduring spirit of those who defend our Constitutional Republic.
The Facts
May is not just another month on the calendar, it is National Military Appreciation Month. Since 1999, for about 25 years, our Constitutional Republic has set aside this month to honor the sacrifices and contributions of the men and women who wear the uniform, and the families who stand beside them. But the roots go even deeper:
How long has May been recognized as Armed Forces Month?
Armed Forces Day was established in 1949 and first observed in May 1950 as a day to honor all military branches. Armed Forces Month came later, May was officially designated as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 by Congress to honor the sacrifices and contributions of the U.S. military. So, it’s been a national month of observance for about 25 years now.
What else is celebrated in May?
May is packed with important observances, including:
National Military Appreciation Month (all month)
Loyalty Day (May 1)
Victory in Europe (VE) Day (May 8)
Military Spouse Appreciation Day (the Friday before Mother’s Day)
Armed Forces Day (the third Saturday in May)
Memorial Day (last Monday in May)
All of these highlight the valor, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment of those in the military and their families.
May is a month that carries the weight of sacrifice, service, and the unwavering commitment of our military. For over 25 years, May has been recognized as National Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor and thank our armed forces and their families for their tireless dedication to our Constitutional Republic.
From the stirring history of VE Day on May 8, marking the end of World War II in Europe, to Memorial Day at the month’s end, a day of reflection for those who paid the ultimate price, May is a time to remember that freedom is never free. It’s a month filled with reminders of loyalty, unity, and the bedrock of our nation’s defense.
The Shift to June
Yet, as the calendar flips to June, the attention of many shifts abruptly. Pride Month bursts into the spotlight, celebrating the legacy of the Stonewall Riots of June 1969 and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ equality. That, too, is a story of courage and resilience.
It’s a month of color, celebration, and visibility, a time when those of us who have been sidelined for generations stand up and say: we’re here, we’re proud, and we won’t go back.
The Tension and Debate
Here’s the reality: Some argue that Pride Month overshadows May’s military focus, even calling for Pride to be “moved” to May. Some even call for Pride to be moved or abolished, saying May should take its place. But let’s be clear, this is not about one month erasing another. These are two different chapters of America’s story. May has always been about military service and sacrifice. June has always been about visibility and equality for LGBTQ+ Americans.
Regarding June and Pride Month
Our nation is strong because of its diversity, of both service and identity. Military service and LGBTQ+ pride are different parts of the American story, each deserving the spotlight.
There’s often tension or debate about how Pride Month in June overshadows military appreciation in May. Some argue that Pride Month should be moved or even abolished because they believe May deserves more recognition for the sacrifices of military families. However, historically, these are two different causes, May has always been about honoring the military, while June’s Pride Month started after the Stonewall Riots in June 1969, marking a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ civil rights.
Our #GoRight Perspective
Opinion: At #Go Right News , we believe that both deserve recognition, but not at the expense of the other. It’s true that May often gets forgotten as we rush into the rainbow of June. But to erase Pride would be to forget the fight for dignity and civil rights for many of our friends, neighbors, and family. To forget May, however, would be to forget the warriors who ensure we have the freedom to even debate this question in the first place.
May’s original purpose
It’s important to remember that May has always been about military service and sacrifice. That doesn’t diminish Pride Month, but it does highlight that some feel overshadowed or want to elevate military appreciation even further, especially given the serious stakes involved.
May and June: A Call to Educate
May is a month for military appreciation. June is a month for Pride. Let’s respect the history, purpose, and courage behind both. Let’s ensure that the heroes of May are never overshadowed, and that the voices of June are never silenced. Let’s never forget that our Constitutional Republic is built on the service of many, and the freedom of all.
Instead of pitting them against one another, let’s educate ourselves and honor them both. Let’s ensure that May’s Military Appreciation Month isn’t forgotten in the rainbow of June. Let’s make sure those who gave their lives for our freedom are never overshadowed, and that those who fight for equality and visibility know that their rights, too, are worth protecting.
Let’s never forget the heroes of May, and let’s never stop celebrating the voices of June.
That’s how we build a nation that truly values all of its people.

Final Thoughts and the Call to #GoRight
Friends, let’s not forget the bigger picture. May is a month to honor those who serve in uniform, those who carry the weight of defending our Constitutional Republic, often in silence, often without thanks. June is for those who stand for equality and visibility, those who refuse to be sidelined ever again. Both months matter. Both deserve our attention.
But here’s the truth: May’s heroes too often fade into the background as soon as the rainbow banners come out in June. That doesn’t mean we diminish Pride, but it does mean we must refuse to let our veterans, our military families, and their sacrifices be overshadowed by louder voices. We owe it to them to remember their service, not just during May, but all year long.
At #GoRight, we believe in standing up for the whole truth, not cherry-picking the parts that fit a convenient narrative. We believe in doing right, honoring both the soldier’s sacrifice and the citizen’s right to live free. We believe in thinking right, applying logic and common sense instead of knee-jerk reactions. We believe in being right, living with honor, respect, and responsibility. And we believe in voting right, electing leaders who put We the People first, not special interests.
So let’s do what’s right. Let’s educate ourselves, not cancel each other. Let’s make sure May’s quiet heroism never gets lost in the noise of June.
Let’s #GoRight, not just in politics, but in how we treat one another and how we protect what makes this country truly great.
Remember: May is for those who serve in uniform. June is for those who stand for equality. We must honor both.
