Did America Get Silenced Before the Truth Had a Chance to Speak?

There was a time in America when asking questions was considered patriotic.

Then COVID happened.

Suddenly, asking where the virus came from was dangerous. Questioning lockdowns was dangerous. Talking about censorship was dangerous. Raising concerns about election integrity was dangerous. Challenging official narratives was treated as if it were a threat to the country itself.

But now, after years of censorship, bans, lost accounts, ruined reputations, and citizens being treated like enemies for asking what should have been obvious questions, the truth is still trying to break through the wall they built around it.

A CIA officer named James Erdman testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that Dr. Anthony Fauci improperly influenced intelligence discussions about COVID origins and allegedly pushed the natural origin narrative over the lab leak theory. Erdman claimed Fauci inserted himself into intelligence deliberations in early 2020 and again in 2021, and he alleged that intelligence leadership downplayed or altered assessments that supported the lab leak theory. The CIA pushed back, calling the hearing political theater, while Republicans, including Senator Rand Paul and Senator Ron Johnson, called for a deeper investigation. (Homeland Security Committee)

Let us be clear. These are allegations made in sworn testimony. They are not the same thing as a final court judgment. But they matter because they fit a pattern many Americans have already lived through.

The pattern was simple.

Government speaks.

Big Tech enforces.

Media mocks.

Citizens get silenced.

Then years later, the forbidden question becomes acceptable.

Was the Lab Leak Question Suppressed Before America Got Answers?

The lab leak theory was not some wild fantasy invented out of nowhere.

Before the Trump administration ended, the State Department released a fact sheet on the Wuhan Institute of Virology, warning that China had researched animal coronaviruses under conditions that increased the risk of accidental exposure and raising concerns about illnesses among Wuhan lab researchers before the first known outbreak. (State Department)

That should have been enough to allow an open national conversation.

Instead, many Americans watched the lab leak question get treated as forbidden speech. People were mocked as conspiracy theorists. Posts were flagged. Videos disappeared. Accounts were restricted. The official line was protected harder than the public’s right to know.

That is not how science is supposed to work.

Science should invite questions. Government should welcome scrutiny. Intelligence agencies should not be allowed to hide behind secrecy when the consequences affect every family, church, school, business, and community in this country.

The real issue is not whether every citizen had the perfect answer from the beginning.

The real issue is whether Americans had the right to ask.

Did Big Tech Become the Government’s Speech Police?

The COVID censorship fight cannot be separated from Big Tech.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg later said senior Biden administration officials pressured Meta to censor COVID-related content, including humor and satire. He said he regretted not speaking up more and that the pressure was wrong. (Reuters)

That is the part Americans cannot ignore.

When government officials pressure private companies to remove speech the government does not like, it creates a constitutional problem. The government may claim it is not directly censoring anyone because a private platform clicked the button. But if the pressure came from government power, the First Amendment concern does not vanish.

This is where the 1984 comparison becomes more than a slogan.

It felt like Americans were being told that the truth was whatever the approved authority said it was at that moment. If the official narrative changed later, nobody apologized. Nobody restored the lost accounts. Nobody gave people back their reach. Nobody repaired the damage done to reputations, businesses, candidates, commentators, or movements.

That is not public health.

That is narrative control.

How Did This Personally Affect Me?

I do not say this as someone watching from a distance.

I lived it.

I lost my YouTube accounts. I faced Facebook bans. I lost my Twitter account. I watched my online presence get hit because I dared to speak out about COVID, election integrity, censorship, lockdowns, and what I believed was happening to our country.

And I was not alone.

Many Americans lost their voice online. Some lost their pages. Some lost their income. Some lost years of built-up audiences. Some were locked out of the public square because they questioned the approved story.

That matters because in modern America, social media is not just entertainment. It is where people organize, report, campaign, speak, publish, challenge power, and build movements.

When those platforms silence political speech under pressure from government-aligned narratives, the damage is not theoretical. It reaches real people.

It reached me.

It reached countless others.

And it changed the way Americans understood free speech in the digital age.

Were Election Integrity Questions Treated the Same Way?

COVID was not the only issue where Americans were told to shut up.

The 2020 election created another forbidden conversation.

Many of us raised concerns about election integrity, emergency rule changes, mail ballots, ballot handling, chain of custody, platform censorship, media suppression, and public trust in the process. We were told those concerns were dangerous. We were mocked. We were censored. We were treated as if questioning the system was the same as attacking the country.

That framing was wrong.

In a Constitutional Republic, election integrity is not an extremist issue. It is the foundation of self-government.

That does not mean every claim made about 2020 was accurate. It does mean Americans had the right to raise concerns, demand transparency, examine rules, question procedures, and insist that elections be secure, verifiable, and trusted by the people.

The same pattern appeared again.

The government and media class wanted the conversation controlled.

Big Tech helped enforce the boundaries.

Citizens who pushed back paid the price.

And years later, many of the same people who mocked election integrity concerns now admit that voter confidence, secure procedures, chain of custody, transparency, and censorship around election-related speech are serious issues.

That is why this matters.

Not because every person who questioned the system got every detail right.

But because Americans were punished for asking questions that free citizens should always be allowed to ask.

What Did Trump Get Right Before the Narrative Shifted?

Before Trump was pushed out of power, his administration had already raised concerns about the Wuhan lab and the possibility that the COVID origin story was not as simple as the public had been told. The State Department’s fact sheet put those concerns into the official record. (State Department)

At the same time, it is also fair to acknowledge the early chaos.

When COVID first hit, the country was scared. People were getting sick. Doctors were learning in real time. Hospitals were preparing for the worst. President Trump was given Dr. Fauci and other public health officials as experts, and the administration had to make fast decisions under pressure.

Early mistakes can be forgiven when they are made in good faith.

What cannot be ignored is what happened after the fear hardened into policy, and policy hardened into power.

Lockdowns, mandates, censorship, account bans, school closures, business restrictions, speech restrictions, and the shaming of dissent became part of daily life.

The issue is no longer whether every decision was perfect in the first weeks of panic.

The issue is whether officials used uncertainty to centralize control and silence Americans.

What Did COVID Power Do to North Carolina?

COVID was not only a Washington story.

Here in North Carolina, people felt it in their homes, churches, schools, and small businesses.

Governor Roy Cooper ordered K through 12 public schools closed and banned larger gatherings as the pandemic response began. North Carolina later issued a statewide stay-at-home order that directed people to remain home except for essential activities, banned gatherings of more than ten people, and required physical distancing. (NC DPS)

Families felt that.

Parents felt that.

Children felt that.

Workers felt that.

Churches felt that.

Small businesses felt that.

And years later, North Carolina courts were still sorting through the constitutional damage. The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled that Cooper’s pandemic rules for standalone bars were illogical and violated the state constitution because bars were kept closed while restaurants serving alcohol were allowed to reopen under limited conditions. (AP News)

That should be a warning to every state, every county, and every local government.

Emergency power is still power.

And power must be checked.

Why Does This Matter Locally?

At the local level, this story is not about Washington personalities.

It is about neighbors.

It is about the restaurant owner who lost income.

It is about the church member told not to gather.

It is about the parent watching a child fall behind during school disruptions.

It is about the worker who questioned a mandate and feared losing a job.

It is about the activist, candidate, commentator, or citizen who posted a question online and watched the platform punish them for it.

In Alamance County, in North Carolina, and across America, people did not need Washington to tell them COVID was serious.

They knew it was serious.

But seriousness does not cancel liberty.

A crisis does not erase the Constitution.

Public health does not require government-approved speech.

And election integrity does not become dangerous just because powerful people do not want to talk about it.

What Was the One Thing Worth Remembering From That Time?

There was one thing I will never regret from that period.

The rallies.

The people.

The energy.

The patriotic Americans who showed up because they wanted the country back.

Not because they hated anyone.

Not because they wanted chaos.

Not because they wanted people to suffer.

They showed up because they remembered what America felt like before fear became policy, before lockdowns became lifestyle, before speech became permission-based, and before government and Big Tech acted like they had the power to decide what citizens were allowed to question.

Those rallies mattered.

They reminded us that America was still alive.

They reminded us that liberty still had a pulse.

They reminded us that the Constitution is not just a document under glass.

It is a promise that only survives when citizens refuse to surrender it.

Did They Protect Public Health or Protect the Narrative?

The Go Right with Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist for Liberty Perspective

This is where the comfortable excuses stop.

If government officials got COVID wrong in good faith, Americans can forgive mistakes.

But if officials pressured platforms, buried dissent, steered intelligence, punished whistleblowers, protected preferred narratives, and treated citizens like enemies for asking questions, that is not a mistake.

That is abuse.

The issue is not whether every lab leak claim was proven from day one.

The issue is whether Americans had the right to ask.

The issue is not whether every election integrity claim was perfect.

The issue is whether Americans had the right to question the process.

The issue is not whether every COVID policy was made with bad intentions.

The issue is whether emergency power became a weapon against liberty.

Because once the government can call dissent misinformation, pressure private companies to silence it, and then walk away when the truth becomes more complicated, every American has a problem.

What happens next?

We need document releases.

We need sworn testimony.

We need protection for whistleblowers.

We need limits on emergency power.

We need bans on government censorship by proxy.

We need transparency around public health funding, gain-of-function research, intelligence assessments, election-related censorship, and the relationship between federal agencies and social media companies.

And yes, we need justice.

Not revenge.

Justice.

Justice for the people who were silenced.

Justice for the workers who were threatened.

Justice for the families who were told not to question.

Justice for the Americans who lost platforms.

Justice for the voices that were erased.

Justice for citizens who were right to ask hard questions in a free country.

Because in a Constitutional Republic, the government does not own the truth.

The people have the right to search for it.

Final Thought

The lesson from COVID cannot be forgotten.

Never again should emergency power become permanent power.

Never again should public health become a weapon against free speech.

Never again should election integrity questions be treated like thought crimes.

Never again should Big Tech and government work together to silence Americans.

And never again should citizens be treated like enemies for asking the questions their government refused to answer.

This is not about living in the past.

This is about protecting the future.

Because the next crisis will come.

The next emergency will be declared.

The next official narrative will be defended.

And when that moment arrives, America must remember what happened when the people were told to be quiet.

We do not need less speech.

We need more truth.

We do not need more censorship.

We need more accountability.

We do not need a government that manages public opinion.

We need a Constitutional Republic that respects the people.
